Over the last few months I have been thinking about starting up this blog. The truth is that I spent the first major part of my life just gliding by and not thinking much about the future. I always thought about growing up, getting married, working and all of that but I never really thought about it. I thought if I was lucky I would graduate, get a good job, find a wife and so on. I used to hope a lot. The alternative was a life of bad luck where I can’t get that good job, find my wife or find the wrong person for my wife. I thought that it was all just a big Hasbro The Game of Life
A few years ago I learned a little more about what luck really is and where it comes from. I like to call it luckortunity since life is not about what luck gives you, it is all about what you give luck. It is the opportunity that shows up at your doorstep which most people just ignore. They figure they can grab it another time or rationalize why it wasn’t a good opportunity to begin with. Now “good luck” is a step further, it is the opportunity that you bring upon yourself. If you learn a certain skill, you open up all sorts of new opportunities. If you learn a new language, you can now socialize or do business with a huge new group of people. “Bad Luck” is when you don’t go the extra mile and therefore miss out on all of those opportunities. If you find the perfect job that describes you completely, you get an interview and then get passed up on the job because you didn’t have one skill that you could have learned if you only paid attention in class. This could be anything from knowledge of Microsoft Office to speaking a second language to anything else. It could be huge or it could be small. Being passed up on a job because of a skill that you know you could have had will make you want to shoot yourself.
Over the last few years, I knew the difference between luck and chance but I never really put what I knew into practice. It was only in hindsight that I was able to see how luck was either helping me or not. I was not getting very lucky because I wasn’t actively making new opportunities for myself. A few months ago, I decided it was time for a change. It was time to start living life instead of gliding through it. I decided that I was going to take an active role in my luck and get right into the drivers seat. It’s not so easy to do and it means changing my lifestyle a little but I know that years down the line, I will thank myself. Writing this blog is one of the ways that I am living and creating new opportunities. First I am organizing myself, getting a little disciplined to be able to write and keep to something, learning tons of new computer skills and most of all, keeping my eyes wide open for new opportunities.
